Dr. Azizah al-Hibri, Esq. Founder and Chair of Karamah, is Professor Emerita of law, T. C. Williams School of Law, University of Richmond. She obtained her J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1985 and worked as acorporate lawyer on Wall Street before focusing her efforts on human rights and Islamic jurisprudence. A Ful-bright Scholar, Professor al-Hibri has written extensively on issues of Islam and democracy, Muslim women’srights, and human rights in Islam. She has also guest edited a special volume on Islam by the Journal of Law andReligion. Professor al-Hibri has lectured extensively in the Muslim world in support of Muslim women’s rights. In2007, Dr. al-Hibri received the Virginia First Freedom Award from the Council for America’s First Freedom. Shewas also the recipient of the Dr. Betty Shabazz Recognition Award from Women in Islam in 2006 and the Distin-guished Educator Award from the University of Richmond in 2004. Dr. al-Hibri was appointed to the US Commission on International Religious Freedom in 2011 by President Barack Obama.
